I find that many of my students have memorized the poem that they carry in their pocket for poem in your pocket day. Many of the poems are sing-song types but not all of them and they are not typically very long. Students choose a published poem or write their own. Students naturally seem to memorize them. We practice a bit and then the repetition gets it done. I love that day. My favorite time is walking into the cafeteria or out onto the playground and seeing them taking poems out to share when there is no adult around telling them to do it.
Activities like these inspire students to have fun with poetry. They are also proud of their accomplishment when they can recite it without looking. I had a few students this year recite the one they carried last year. Of course they had huge smiles in their faces while they did it.
