Thanks, Ruth, for the link to the Salon article. That was fascinating to me, because I grew up with a father who had hundreds upon hundreds of poems memorized. He used to spend hours sitting with a book of poetry in his lap, mouthing the words as he looked up at the ceiling, and then checking the book for accuracy. He was gregarious, and loved to share the poems he'd committed to memory (regardless of whether his listeners were interested). The way that some people today will stop you in the middle of a story you're telling and say, "There's a Seinfeld/Simpsons/Friends episode about that," he would stop you and say, "There's a poem about that," and proceed to recite it. There were poems I had memorized simply from hearing him recite them so often. Although we all teased him, I admired his ability even as a child, and now I certainly wish I had an enormous store of my own favorite poems I could call forth at appropriate moments. I think I may try memorizing some poetry this summer, and see how it goes. Our seventh graders do memorize (and recite) one poem of at least 20 lines every year. It's not much, but it's something.
