future for publishing poetry?

Emily Townsend asked: "I'm wondering how you think publishing is currently affecting poetry, where you think poetry is going in terms of trends and publishing, and where you'd like to see it go?"

A challenging question, Emily. Given that only a small segment of readers even think about buying poetry (although more of them would enjoy it if they tried!), I am heartened that many beautiful books of children's poetry are still being published every year. Certain houses and editors tuly love poetry and are willing to gamble on it. Events like Marilyn Singer & Barbara Genco's Poetry Blast at ALA and Sylvia Vardell & Janet Wong's Poetry Round Up at TLA do a great job showcasing new poets, whose travel the publishers are willing to sponsor. Wonderful themed anthologies come out every year, accompanied by gorgeous illustrations (check out Paul Janeczcko's FIREFLY JULY, illustrated by Melissa Sweet, or Lee Bennett Hopkins' ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, illustrated by Guy Billout). It seems to me that verse novels and poetic biographies are on the rise, and that students like their dense, abbreviated format. When I compare what is out there to what was available when I was a child, I am amazed at the variety.

Of course I am greedy for more poetry! I would love to see more poetry books in classroom libraries, available to students for silent reading along with fiction and nonfiction. I would love to see more teachers use poetry in a variety of ways: a learning tool, a memorization piece, a heart-opener, a conversation-starter. I would love to see poetry books spotlighted in libraries and bookstores, so that readers could not help but notice them.

More, more, more! I will always want more poetry!
