You have painted a beautiful frame for this discussion, Emily. CROSSING STONES is such a powerful book, I agree. I found Helen's writing so compelling, the form so elegant, the voices so absorbing. And with the centenary of WWI beginning, it's a good moment to stop and look at the impact of war on both soldiers and families-- still a relevant theme. Plus, the attitudes about the roles of girls and women are STILL a struggle for many-- AND the fear of an epidemic that takes away our loved ones is not too far from our present reality either. How Helen weaves together each of these dramatic turns, but still maintains the focus on young people, their questions, and their relationships is really amazing. This book is about PEOPLE, not war, feminism, or disease, and about how we cope with what life sends our way and how we make choices about whom to love and how to be.

I was lucky enough to bring Helen to my panel of poets at the Texas Library Association conference when this book came out and taped her reading a few selections from the book. You'll find those brief excerpts at my blog, here:

Today we begin our discussion of "Crossing Stones" by Helen Frost (Frances Foster, 2009). For the next few days, we'll talk about the book itself. Many of you will know that Helen Frost frequently joins our conversations here at CCBC-net. We are fortunate to have Helen join us to answer our questions about "Crossing Stones" later this week.

After our discussions of poetry this month, I'm eager to hear people's responses to "Crossing Stones". For me, the novel in verse encompasses so many aspects of poetry that we have been discussing. There is the accessibility of the novel in verse that Pam and others suggested worked so well with teens, culturally diverse readers, and reluctant readers. Also, I found
"Crossing Stones" conveyed complex political, social, and emotional ideas and issues. I believe this power of the written (or spoken) word is one of the joys we find in poetry. I also found the multi-sensory aspects of poetry that we've discussed evident in Helen's interconnected "cupped hands"sonnets. Here, there is rhyme and rhythm, but also we see the beautiful visual on the page of the flowing river voice of Muriel and the alternating but equally grounded voices of Ollie and Emma.

Who else had a chance to read "Crossing Stones"? We'd love for you to join us and share your thoughts.
