Poetry

It's been enlightening to read the CCBC-net community's thoughts on poetry posted over the past two weeks. More than one person has commented on a range of trends including the decline in poetry memorization at school as well as the publication of poetry anthologies, the ongoing popularity of accessible humorous poetry, and a lively interest in performed poetry among young adults. When I was in school, I remember a vague feeling among many of my peers that poetry was incomprehensible or boring. I don't get that impression any more from children and teens. (There's nothing scientific or data-based in that thought -- it's strictly a personal observation.) I don't know if it's the popularity and presence of novels in verse, or the hip-ness of poetry slams, or simply my skewed sample. Whatever the reason, I find it encouraging.

We'll soon be moving on to our discussions of *Crossing Stones* by Helen Frost (Frances Foster Books / Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2009) and then
*What the Heart Knows: Chants, Charms & Blessings* by Joyce Sidman
(Houghton Mifflin, 2013). If you haven't had the pleasure of reading these books yet, it's not too late! I encourage you to find them at your library or bookstore today.
