Here in Kansas City, poetry is a favored art form among teenagers - even those with low literacy skills. I think the complexity buried in what seems - on surface - as simplicity makes the works less taxing to read and more attainable. I'd like to see this art form expanded. Especially since it provides a unique mode of emotional expression that might not be captured by a longer work of prose. And for some is more relatable.
I've referred a number of gifted teenagers (high school) to agents and editors over the years and have been told that poetry is not a viable market because the books don't sell well. Ugh.
I think this is a case where corporate entities aren't seeing what is happening out of the view. Poetry slams here are pretty packed by word of mouth.......C
