Nice article and well timed. I'm pleased to say my MG adventure series has been picked up by Move Books and will be out early next year. Prior to that, i'd spent ten years hearing "blacks don't buy books" or "a mainstream audience won't buy that type of book" or " being black makes it a niche market and we won't generate enough sales." Even though the project had well known endorsements.
Sometimes the key is waiting for the right publisher who has a longer lens and caters less to the status quo.We, as a large and diverse CCBC community need to help identify other people of color who have experienced rejection not based on writing skill, but perceived "lack of market" . I think we have enough numbers to get those books visibility as well. What good are all the statistics if we don't bond to do something about it?
I think the timing couldn't be better to show that children harbor more flexibility towards diversity that what marketing indicates.....C
