New Novel in Verse: Two Girls Staring at the Ceiling by Lucy Frank,

Just wanted to alert everybody to the publication this August of Lucy Frank’s wonderful novel, written entirely in verse. Frank won the Phyllis Naylor Reynolds PEN AMERICAN Working Writers Fellowship for this novel in 2011. It follows the unfolding friendship between two very different teenage girls who share a hospital room and an illness.

I had the great joy of hearing parts of this novel read aloud as part of a writers group with Patty Lakin, Roxanne Orgill and Erica Tamar. I was quite literally ‘blown away,’ not words I use often. The poems allow both girls to have a voice that is both funny and vulnerable – and exposes how we all feel about getting sick, being frightened, and perhaps most important as Frank herself says, “how do you keep on laughing. How can you remember when things feel really bad, that it won’t stay that way, and that life will be happy again.” Look for it in August, published by Schwartz and Wade, an imprint at Random House.

Author: My Life as A Fifth Grade Comedian, and many other novels, including the upcoming Amber Brown Horses Around with Bruce Coville.
