Well, this is nice! Thanks, Maggie. I'm still puzzling over the popularity of that book among middle schoolers. The drama of it, maybe, or the acknowledgement that kids can love their imperfect parents. Or, to get back on topic here, is it the poetry?
The thing I want to say about poetry is that it can be fun, but it isn't always, and I don't know any poets who mark their success by book sales--we're after something immeasurable, so we don't really try to measure what we find in our reading or what we offer in our writing.
The delight of language can bring readers into poetry, but I think it's the depth and texture of it that holds them there, when it does.

I also found it interesting that our kids chose Helen Frost's novel-in-verse Hidden, hands down, as their favorite book in the Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award program. It was not even a close call, and we had well over 200 kids voting.
