I absolutely LOVE the work of Marilyn Nelson. We had her come to our school district a year or so ago and she presented at two high schools and an elementary school. Let me tell you that the way to inspire a love of poetry is to host a poet event like the ones she did! At our school, she held an auditorium with around 1500 high school students absolutely mesmerized as she read her poetry and talked about civil rights and African American history.
We worked for a year to raise money and forge a collaboration with our local university to bring her in. Besides the three school visits, she did an evening presentation at the University that was open to the public.
What a talent! Before she spoke, we linked our social studies classes and language arts to Nelson’s Fortunes Bones, A Wreath for Emmett Till, and The Freedom Business. We used Sweethearts of Rhythm with our music department. It was a wonderful cross curriculum collaboration.
Nelson not only touched hearts and minds, but I believe she changed lives with her presentation.

I am not sure where these rank in terms of popularity but I wanted to share these stories told in verse.
