Merri's mention of Patrice's anthologies (a few of which I edited, though not her personal favorite) point out that the focus of the discussion so far has been on poetry in the younger ages. When I was at Holt YA poetry began to emerge, in part because of Hip Hop and rap, in part the Neo-Beat plus coffee house moment, in part the popularity of of Poetry Slams in schools and libraries. From what I can see, YA poetry -- at least YAs writing their own poetry -- is still popular. As YA poetry rose we also began to get the novels in verse, from Virginia Euwer Wolff to of course Karen Hess, Ellen Hopkins and many others. I think the high moment of those novels has passed, but adding YA does change the story of the marginalization of poetry a bit.

While I hesitate to disagree with Lee and Ruth, I think they have mis-framed the CCore relationship to poetry. First, CC is not the same as testing. The standards are very different from either the assessments or the use of assessment. Second, CC encourages indeed demands the kind of close reading that some poetry rewards. Not all poems -- many poems should be read for wit, fun, pleasure, ease -- but some poems do also command and reward the kind of close reading CC requires. From musical scores to manuals, from poems and plays to pamphlets and propaganda, the ELA standards can be applied to any reading that allows and encourages readers to pay attention -- of which This Same Sky is a marvelous example.
