Few editors are interested in doing anthology. There are also fewer anthologists.
Rights can be a problem not only budget wise but so time consuming.
Many do not realize the costs of an anthology. For example my SHARING THE SEASONS, illustrated by David Diaz (McElderry Books) ran over $9,000.00 in permissions alone. Consider such a budget plus advances to an anthologist and illustrator and one can see why anthology is becoming a dinosaur.
I doubt if one will see the 'thick' collections in the future like Livingston's classic titles, Adoff's breakthrough volumes such as THE POETRY OF BLACK AMERICA (Harper) or the Kennedy's (X. J. and Dorothy) TALKING LIKE THE RAIN (Little, Brown).
It is a saddened affair; anthologies bring together so many varied voices as well as introducing new works - something I have done for decades. Many poets' careers have started via my collections.
In addition, fewer books of poetry are being published annually. With over 3,000 books for children published last year, far less than l00 were books
of verse. This includes original poetry, verse novels, rhymed picture books and the infamous two collections!
One wonders, ponders, why poetry is not an integral part of a child's everyday life.

I think of the thick anthologies on our library shelves compiled by David McCord, Paul Janeczko, Myra Cohn Livingston, Arnold Adoff. They have all but disappeared. Do you have any theories as to why this is? Is it too difficult or expensive to secure the rights?I'd really love to hear the experiences of anthologists on this listserv, such as Ruth Gordon and Lee Bennett Hopkins, as well as those from the publishing industry.--KTOn Apr 3, 2014, at 2:08 PM, )

Anthology as we knew it in the past is a rare breed. Fewer and fewer collections are being published than ever before.
