Many of our students love novels in verse. They can be quick reads (even when they look thick) and because of the careful word selection, they often convey emotion in a powerful way. The best novels in verse use language in fresh and surprising ways. Helen Frost and Margarita Engle are masters of the novel in verse, but I also love Allan Wolf's The Watch that Ends the Night: voices from the Titanic, and Martine Leavitt's My Book of Life by Angel.

Good novels in verse can help teens appreciate the power of words and make poetry more accessible. Sometimes, students don't even notice that the book they are enjoying is even written in verse, and are surprised that it is poetry! Pam

It's time to begin our April discussion of poetry books for children and teens. Do you have a favorite new anthology or do you prefer picture book editions of a single poem? What about novels in verse? Have you found a way to introduce young people to poetry that creates a lasting appreciation for the power of language? Please jump in and share your thoughts!

I've been especially appreciative in the last few years of poetry books designed for the very young, such as Wee Rhymes: Baby's First Poetry Book by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Jane Dyer (A Paula Wiseman Book / Simon & Schuster, 2013) and A Little Bitty Man and Other Poems for the Very Young by Halfdan Rasmussen, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes, translated by Marilyn Nelson and Pamela Espeland (Candlewick Press, 2011). I love the playful feeling of both these volumes, and the way they seem to naturally encourage care-givers to share words. That sharing may begin with the poems of others from a book, but it can easily lead to spontaneous word play.

In the second half of April we'll be focusing on two poetry books. We're pleased that authors Helen Frost and Joyce Sidman will be participating in the CCBC-net discussion of their books.

Crossing Stones by Helen Frost (Frances Foster Books / Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2009) What the Heart Knows: Chants, Charms & Blessings by Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski (Houghton Mifflin, 2013)
