Thank you for sharing more about the ideas behind the portrayal of the sexual relationship between Alex and Leo, Julie.
One thing I wanted to note is that I appreciate that this book explores sexual pleasure that isn't intently and only focused on intercourse, although yes, they do get there.
And then, from Alex's perspective, Leo ruins everything afterwards by saying "I love you." I actually appreciated the humor in that scene, even though it's also heartwrenching. We have Leo's new loss, Alex's closed off emotions, and her response to his words are, "You're confused. You're grieving. You just had a massive orgasm."
It's such an antithesis to the stereotype that every girl wants a boy to say "I love you," and even though much more is playing out in that scene and what follows, I found it true to Alex's character and the circumstances.
