I'm not sure I agree with this, Megan. I don't think Alex is broken, but I do think a lot of her toughness is the result of grieving her father and, possibly, the loss of her best friend. (She had already lost her friend long before Becca was diagnosed with cancer.) I think she's afraid of being hurt so she keeps people at a distance.

Part of what I thought made this such an interesting book was its portrayal of a grieving teen. She's not wallowing in her sadness, but trying to go on with her life as people do. I actually think her relationship with Becca is the most important one in the book. She has to be willing to risk being close to her, even if it might mean more pain with the prospect of losing her again.
