On sharing power, I found it fascinating when June asks Enki:
"Do you love me?"
and he answers:
"I love the whole world."
I think Enki is all about sharing power. I think that is why he brings all of the recorded voices together for June's art project, and why, by the end, June sees him as almost interchangeable with the city . And as for sex--well, Enki not only loves everyone, he has sex pretty indiscriminately as well.
June, on the other hand, struggles with her desire to be special, to have power all to herself. She wants to be chosen, by Enki (as his favorite love/lover), and by the queen (for the award). And she is angry that her father did not choose to live--for her . Throughout the course of the book, however, she does learn to share power.
This doesn't answer the question of why the less privileged Enki has to be sacrificed in order for the more privileged June to become queen, of course. But I do see this novel as one that values multiple perspectives and collaboration.
