The Japanese ambassador to Palmares Tres is a man in search of intense physical contact. We learn that Enki is getting outlawed technology from this man in exchange for the physical contact the ambassador desires. In that sense, sex is also a commodity, but I found myself sympathetic to both of them, something that surprised me."
I too found the concept of Tokyo 10 an intriguing element of the story which reflected the idea of exploring the sense of self both within and outside the context of one's body. I also thought the idea of being without a body might be a nod to the idea of "nothingness" as a way of achieving unification with the whole in Budhist thought, a perhaps a form of mass orgiastic sexuality, albeit on a different plane of existence? I do not consider myself as an authority on this subject, and would appreciate others' insights on the subject.
In this respect the book seems to respect a sense of diversity which instead of assuming a melting pot, allows individuals from different cultures, and from different subcultures within a culture, to identify themselves and express themselves through relationships that reflect their differing cultural roots.
As Megan and others have noted, this is a richly envisioned text. I love it and plan to read it again and again.
