I think it's what a particular editor thinks the market wants, not as much what the kids would actually read/not read. In my experience some worry about a guy showing too much interest in sex wether it is with another male or a girl. I have read several GLBT books and authors still do more with the feeling of love than with the actual physical enactment and from talking with kids that's what most are looking for. And from what I heard at the IRC conference many teachers noted that fewer parents seem bothered by GLBT lit as well. I have always thought that many editors are conservative just in case, while readers, especially young readers, don't have those narrow boundaries.
In my first book there was a kiss between two guys. I thought little of it, they were both minor characters. My editor was shaky, but i got a lot of positive comments from readers and bloggers about "THE KISS in chapter 2". My current book has two relationships, one guy/guy and one guy/girl and my main concern was making both of them realistic while not making it an "issue book".
