Thanks so much for the link, Pamela.
I very much applaud the underlying sentiments expressed in the article, and the conclusion that there's a great need for more discussion of healthy dynamics in relationships (gay, straight, and more) as well as greater openness in conversations regarding sexual violence and abuse.
However, as many others have expressed in regard to other subjects, I get nervous about the overt use of books that deal with sexual violence in a classroom setting (as I think the article is advocating? I wasn't completely clear.) Given the statistics the author cites at the outset and the reality that there will likely be survivors in every room, I think any classroom discussions about sexual violence should really be led by professionals trained in that area. Even reading books that depict sexual violence can be triggering for survivors, and a well-meaning discussion could be similarly difficult. I'm not advocating for silence-- but I think the first consideration should always be care! And one of the benefits of books is that readers can come to them on their own terms, when and where they choose.
Again, I agree with the need for education and for all to be aware of resources available to them. I'm just not sure about the (required) use of fiction in that effort?
