I think sometimes it's good to step back from the big issues we've been discussing and share some humor. The French do this well as do the Navajo. We talked about sexuality in teen books - also the importance of supporting independent book stores. I knew that subject line would get you to open this e-mail. It's not Brenda and I, it's French booksellers pose naked to support children's book on nudity. If you want to support your community bookstore, Kona Stories, click this link to James Patterson's Booksellers Pledge and fill in the blanks. The best-selling author has started a program to give away $1 million of his personal fortune to dozens of bookstores, it's a long-shot, but we'd like to be included!
Book Groups!
We read a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction in our book groups. No 'membership' required; just read the book, bring either a light pupu or a beverage, and join us. It's all about fun and fellowship! This month this is what we're reading:
"Second Tuesday"- Our Fiction Group: Tues, March 11 _at_ 6:30pm

Our Lesbian Group: Tues, March 18 _at_ 6:30pm

In imagining the real life of this brilliant, lesbian polymath known for her chilling supernatural stories, Melissa Pritchard creates a multi-layered tale in which the dead writer inhabits the heart and mind of her lonely, modern-day biographer.
"Just the Facts"- Our Non-Group: Tues, March 25 _at_ 6:00pm
In this masterful, comprehensive account of the Irish Potato Famine, delivered with novelistic flair, John Kelly gives us not only the startling facts of this disaster--one of the worst to strike mankind, but examines the intersection of political greed, bacterial infection, religious intolerance, and racism that made it possible. The book is The Graves are Walking: The Great Famine and the Saga of the Irish People.
All remaining calendars are $5. Teachers looking for photos for classroom use- come in and we'll make you an extra special deal!
March is Women's History month. Obviously, books play a role. This New Yorker article argues that "Harper Lee and Louise Fitzhugh taught their readers that difference, nonconformity, and even subversion should be celebrated in young girls".
As long as I'm talking about female writers, here are 19 Things Women Writers are Sick of Hearing. And as long as I started off with a couple of children's books, here are 22 Books you should read based on your childhood favorites.
