As I've previously stated, I live in North Carolina where there were several high profile censorship cases last fall, including one aimed at removing *The House of the Spirits* from the tenth grade honors curriculum in western Wautauga county, which has "a conservative base," but is also the location of Appalachian State University. As many of the librarians on this list serv are probably aware, author Isabel Allende responded to efforts to remove her book:

*School Library Journal* also ran an article about community efforts to keep the book as part of the curriculum. I found the statements of the students regarding their right to read and lean most compelling:

A review committee of the school board voted unanimously to keep the book as part of the sophomore honors curriculum.
My recollection of the book (which I read around the time of graduate school) is that it was an honest representative of what the world learned were the horrors of the Pinochet regime and Chile's "Dirty War," including the plight of the "disappeared ones." I remember *The House of the Spirits*as being a very moving family story of several generations of women during a very dark period in their country's history. In Allende's memoir *Paula*,
readers learn how events in *The House of the Spirits* are related to those in Allende's family, including the death of her uncle, Chilean President Salvadore Allende, during the coup.
