Guilty

In response to Megan's question and because most of us have rent to pay, I admit that I have been hesitant in the past about certain books -- but the *community
*I was in made a difference. When I was in a private laboratory school library that served PreK-6, the library shelves were overflowing with nonfiction books related to human sexuality and reproduction, starting with ones for the youngest age group. In contrast, when I was in a private school library (K-4) in a more conservative community, I'm not sure we had any informational books about human reproduction - and I didn't push to get them. After some of the books we did have were challenged, all the librarians (middle & high school, too) wrote a collection development and management policy that included a policy and form for dealing with challenges. So, we made progress! And regarding those challenges, I would never in a million years have *predicted* them -- so much for hesitation.

When I served as the only public middle school librarian in another academic community, I got everything I wanted for the library that I thought kids would want to read. (I still have a vivid memory of one small group of girls after another gathering around *Go Ask Alice* to read the
"dirty parts."). However, I used fiction with my advisory group of gifted students to discuss common adolescent issues and concerns. A parent complained about one book we were reading that was hot at the time and had a character -- whom readers were* not* supposed to like -- that said some racist and homophobic things. We agreed that her child would be excused from the discussion while the group finished it. However, I respectfully disagreed with her assessment that the book was racist and homophobic -- the unlikable character was but, if anything, I thought the author was advocating acceptance and tolerance. I think *Point of view* can really make a difference.

Julie, who is making the best of a bad weather event day
