School Policies

I'm happy to say that in my school district, principle prevails over politics, and I certainly hope there are many other districts that protect the intellectual freedom of its students.

We have a clear policy regarding challenges of library books and classroom novels, and that policy is followed. Students are allowed to read alternative texts where there is a parental objection. (We teach Alexi's Part-time Indian, and every year there is a request or two for an alternative read.) We try hard to accommodate and respect parents, their values and concerns, while educating them about the rights of other students to read these books.

Our administration has supported me on several occasions when a high school library book has been questioned, and has helped defuse tense situations when we met with concerned parents.

I have been very grateful for a district that has clear policies, supports children's right to read, and supports teachers and librarians who provide access to a wide variety of informational books and pleasure reading designed to create life-long readers. We often hear about the schools that are too willing to avoid controversy and restrict access to books. We aren't always aware of the many (I hope) who take the high road.
