In my experience in the public school environment, Emily, I've found that policies governing intellectual freedom are largely matters of "lip service." Schools boards adopt them, administrators ignore them, and boards allow it. Politics always prevails over principle.

Hello All--
My issue with that clip is how the superintendent said right away that if a concerned parent brought their policy for middle school and high school students to task, they could "look at changing the policy." What? Who is going to stand up and say, "Hey! The reason that parents can't restrict access for their middle and high school students is because even kids are entitled to intellectual freedom?" It's also worthy to mention that kids of that age are all steeped in some kind of playground sex (mis)education anyway, making it all the more important that they have unfettered, non-judgmental access to high quality fact-based books on the topic. As we youth services librarians know too well, well-meaning parents can really get in the way of their kids' ability to connect to the right information at the right time. I feel sorry for the poor girl who checked the book out... the dad has really shamed her and her book choice publicly. What a frustrating and sad thing to see.
