Have any of you all read Not a Swan, by Michelle Magorian (UK title, A Little Love Song), published in the US in 1992? It contains a fairly explicit sexual encounter, one that comes as the culmination of a growing friendship based on mutual respect, liking, then loving. Rose is an eighteen year old in WW II England, who uncovers the story of a woman who had an illegitimate child in WW I. She becomes friends with a young man who runs a used bookstore, and them more than friends. Rose's deliberate choice to enjoy this new relationship is tied to the theme of the book, which is women being able to make choices about their own lives, many of which require pushing against societal expectations I can't help but feel that Rose's approach to sex is something of an anachronism, but it's one of the most spontaneously joyful first sexual encounters I know of in YA fiction.

Oddly, in the UK edition Rose has only one sister, in the US edition she has two. I've read both, and I think the version with two sisters is stronger.
