Anne Irza-Leggat's post highlighting updates to anniversary editions of "It's Perfectly Normal" and "It's So Amazing" caught my attention. I remember how excited I was when these books came out and have used them many times over the years. My initial response was, "time flies," but my secondary response was, "times are changing." Inclusion of topics such as sexting and broader definitions of gender are so important in books for youth, even if, and especially if, we have preconceived ideas about what they need to be reading about. For example, the book "Want to Go Private?" by Sarah Darer Littman deals with a young teen who is sexually exploited through an online relationship. This was a difficult book for me to read because it felt so believable. I realized that if it seemed realistic to me, then it might also speak true to teens. Teens have very strong connections to technology, and so perhaps it is not too surprising that technology also plays a role in how they identify, define, and experience sex. This is just another change I have observed in YA lit in recent years.
