Hi all, It is great to see the words of praise about It's Perfectly Normal. And suitable for this conversation is the fact that we are publishing a 20th anniversary (!) edition this fall with updates regarding:
* Expanded material on dealing with Internet information about sex and sexual health that may be inaccurate, dated, and lead to risky or unhealthy behaviors and/or outcomes
* Expanded material about dealing with Internet information and images one may come across by accident or intentionally that may be upsetting and/or confusing, and the possible legal consequences of sending material about sex over the Internet
* Expanded material about safe, responsible, and respectful use of social media, including "sexting" and the serious consequences that can ensue from cyberbullying for both the victim and sender
* Broader definition of the term gender, and the inclusion of transgender youth And much more.
We are also publishing a 15th Anniversary edition of It's So Amazing! which will also include lots of updated information (and pictures). You can see more about these two books here: www.candlewick.com/IPNanniversarybrochure
Best wishes, Anne

Debbie, thanks so much for bringing up It's Perfectly Normal. It was such a ground-breaking book at the time it was published, especially for its fresh approach. I love that Michael Emberley shows so many different body types in his illustrations, and both he and Robie Harris show different kinds of "normal" throughout the book. And the humor! The little bird and bee cartoons throughout function almost like a Greek chorus as they bring up real fears and misunderstandings kids can have about sex.
It's matter-of-fact, refreshing approach to sex and sexuality is similar to the attitude we see underlying a lot of the recent YA fiction when it comes to sex.

When I taught that book at U Illinois, students lingered over it, many of them blushing, and most (not all) singing its praises.
