RE: It's Perfectly Normal

Thank you Crystal, for making a distinction between fiction and nonfiction for this topic. I recently read "Not Your Mother's Meatloaf: A Sex Education Comic Book" by Saiya Miller and Liza Bley, a book that is categorized as young adult nonfiction at my public library. This book is step up from "It's Perfectly Normal" in terms of text and pictures, but it has a similar sense of frankness and acceptance of differences. When I think of "Not Your Mother's Meatloaf" and "The F-It List" (which we'll discuss later this month), I feel greatly appreciative of the idea of individual ownership of sexuality as presented for YA readers. Having sex in these books is not necessarily described as a social rite of passage or an moment that defines you. It's more about understanding a new and significant aspect of yourself, for yourself.

While I come to this conversation today as a librarian, my curiosity is also piqued as a former classroom teacher with a minor in health education. I'm interested in the realities of these books in classrooms and libraries from the adult perspective. I'm also interested in how these books are valued by teens-do they seem real to their experiences and ideas?

Looking forward to the conversation!
