I probably should have said more about why I was seeking/reading/thinking about Audre Lorde's essay when I posed it to the listserv this morning.
Part of what Lorde pointed to was attacks on lesbians. Her essay was published by the Council on Interracial Books for Children, an organization that advocated for more inclusive literature for children and young adults. It was in a special issue about sexuality. I wondered if that issue might have statistics and additional essays that might help us contextualize this month's discussion, especially of THE SUMMER PRINCE.
Though it isn't fiction, one book that always makes me smile (because I like it so much) is IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL (written by Robie Harris, illustrated by Michael Emberley). When I taught that book at U Illinois, students lingered over it, many of them blushing, and most (not all) singing its praises. And when I taught Alexie's DIARY OF A PART TIME INDIAN, student's loved it but were afraid to say the word masturbation out loud. I'd have to say it and the word "boner" aloud to break the ice. Then we were off and running. They enthusiastically reported sharing it with their younger sibs.
