"There is no hierarchy of oppression" -- Lorde

Sometime, somewhere, I read a phrase that sticks with me. This morning, I looked it up. The phrase is "There is no hierarchy of oppression." Those powerful words were written by Audre Lorde in 1983 in BULLETIN ON HOMOPHOBIA AND EDUCATION, published by the Council on Interracial Books for children.

Lorde's essay is online here: https://lgbt.ucsd.edu/education/oppressions.html

I can't tell if the essay is complete, or if that is only a part of it. Here's an excerpt:

"Within the lesbian community I am Black, and within the Black community I am a lesbian. Any attack against Black people is a lesbian and gay issue, because I and thousands of other Black women are part of the lesbian community. Any attack against lesbians and gays is a Black issue, because thousands of lesbians and gay men are Black. There is no hierarchy of oppression."

And, I can't get a copy of that CIRB publication. Does anyone on CCBC have it? I'd love a copy of her essay, and I'd like to know what else was published in that issue.

Debbie
