Your information is wrong. Research the archives of School Library Journal, and The Horn Book for articles published in the sixties/seventies about any black writer you want, as well as interviews…Also… read the acceptance speeches of black writers and illustrators who have won the N/C Awards…the Horn Book/Boston Globe Awards….….For you to suggest I have lied or distorted publishing history is way off bass…the internet is an dangerous as it is miraculous…the degree of misinformation is appalling…do your home work, please....Norma Jean

From all I have known and heard from writers of color for many decades, none were "discovered" by white publishers, just as no nations what we now call the Americas were "discovered" by Europeans. Instead, it took organized movements to demand and ensure that writers and illustrators of color -- who were already known and recognized in their communities -- could get publishing contracts -- and it took the establishment of independent presses and bookstores. It is not a coincidence that this happened during the time of the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Virginia Hamilton went to college with the late Janet Schulman, an extraordinary white woman who went on to become one of the best children's book publishers in the country. As a young woman, Janet did the match making between Virginia, and her then boss…the extraordinary white publisher, Susan Hirschman…the rest is history. This was the sixties/early seventies…gifted black writers and illustrators were sought after by white publishers, and their work was much celebrated by reviewers and librarians in this country. The list of black writers and illustrators discovered and nurtured by white publishers then and now is very very very long…..Norma Jean
