Piggy-backing on Lee's message, I thought so highly of Shonto's work that I included him in my book, CHILDREN'S BOOKS ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN, volume II, published by PBC International in 1998. His entry features two books: THE MAGIC OF SPIDER WOMAN and NAVAJO: VISIONS AND VOICES ACROSS THE MESA. His comments detail his artwork and are most enlightening. Unfortunately, both volumes of CBIAD are out of print, but recognition of his work and contributions to children's  books began over 15 years ago. It's wonderful to have him back on the scene.

I knew Shonto back in the late '60's.  He both wrote and illustrated books for Scholastic, Inc., and I believe HarperCollins.  I have an autographed copy of his extraordinary NAVAJO.

More often than not, publishers need artists who can draw people….if he is interested in illustrating children's books, he should expand his portfolio to include people of all ages…more animals, too….Norma Jean
