Hello, and apologies for any cross-postings.   Children’s librarians from San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Unified School District held a Mock Caldecott this morning, splitting into two groups to discuss the following titles:   Big Snow, by Jonathan Bean (FSG) Fish for Jimmy, by Katie Yamasaki (Holiday House) Flora and the Flamingo, by Molly Idle (Chronicle Books) Locomotive, by Brian Floca (Atheneum) Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, by Peter Brown (Little, Brown) Mr. Wuffles!, by David Wiesner (Clarion Books) Niño Wrestles the World, by Yuyi Morales (Roaring Brook) Rain!, by Linda Ashman, illustrated by Christian Robinson
(Houghton Mifflin) Stardines Swim High Across the Sky, by Jack Prelutsky, illustrated by Carin Berger (Greenwillow) The Tortoise and the Hare, by Jerry Pinkney (Little, Brown)     In a perfect world, we would not have had to run off to staff branches and school libraries, and would have had time to eliminate titles with few or no votes, discuss the others, and ballot again, due to the following results:    In Group 1, Locomotive had 8 first place votes, and enough 2ndand 3rdplace votes for a total of 49 points.  But Mr. Wuffles!, with 5 first places, 8 seconds, and 2 thirds, had a total of 48 points!  Definitely, there was not enough spread between them to declare a winner.  The next highest vote earners, both with 22 points, were Flora and the Flamingo and Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, and Niño Wrestles the World had 19.      Interestingly, in Group 2, Locomotive had 7 first place votes, and with the 2ndand 3rdplace votes, a total of 47 points.  Mr. Wuffles! had 5 first places, and enough 2ndand 3rdplaces for a total of 44 points.  So there was no clear winner between those two titles in this group, either! Tortoise and the Hare had 34 points, and then there was a drop to 25 (Niño Wrestles the World) and fewer for other titles.    There are different potential scenarios for both of the groups, in terms of a winner and also for honor titles, but a 2ndballot would be essential—and perhaps even a third.   Thank you, and Happy Holidays to all,   Carla   Carla Kozak Children’s and Teen Collection Development Specialist San Francisco Public Library 95 Washburn Street San Francisco, CA 94103 415-557-4271
