A few titles that stand out from my reading experience in 2013 include:

Midwinter Blood by Marcus Sedgwick (YA fiction) Far Far Away by Tom McNeal (YA fiction) The Year of the Jungle: Memories from the Home Front by Suzanne Collins (Picture book) Bo at Ballard Creek by Kirkpatrick Hill (Fiction)

Midwinter Blood was a strange, hypnotic read. It reminded me of the 1973 horror film "The Wicker Man" about an interloper who cannot guess an island's secret. Far Far Away was also a bit of a darker book, but also one filled with magic, stories, and community. It also made me wish that I had an enticing bakery nearby. Community was a strong theme in Bo at Ballard Creek. Boy, I wish I could have one of those miner breakfasts with that gang! Bo is a lucky, and loved, little girl. I hope there is a sequel in the works. The Year of the Jungle was so well done in terms of text and visuals. You wouldn't guess it from the buggy-eyed cover, but that book transports you right to the heart and mind of the author as a young child.
