My favorite chapter books to read aloud this year (so far!!! I'm so far behind on my reading) are Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman, Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo, and The True Blue Scouts of Sugarman Swamp by Kathi Appelt (my Newbery prediction). All three are delicious to read aloud.

My favorite picture books are The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers, Locomotive by Brian Floca (my Caldecott prediction), and all three 2013 titles by David LaRochelle: How Martha Saved Her Parents from Green Beans, Arlo's ARTrageous Adventure, and Moo.

I DID read a few hundred children's and YA biographies this year for an upcoming book and was impressed with the following 2013 titles: Bad Girls: Sirens, Jezebels, Murderesses, Thieves, & Other Female Villains by Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Stemple The Beatles Were Fab (and They Were Funny) by Kathleen Krull Becoming Ben Franklin by Russell Freedman Diego Rivera: An Artist for the People by Susan Goldman Rubin Gandhi: A March to the Sea by Alice B. McGinty Hoop Genius: How a Desperate Teacher and a Rowdy Gym Class Invented Basketball by John Coy Look Up! Henrietta Leavitt, Pioneering Woman Astronomer by Robert Burleigh Mary Walker Wears the Pants: The True Story of the Doctor, Reformer, and Civil War Hero by Cheryl Hareness Miss Moore Thought Otherwise: How Anne Carroll Moore Created Libraries for Children by Jan Pinborough Nelson Mandela by Kadir Nelson A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin by Jen Bryant When Stravinksy Met Nikinsky: Two Artists, Their Ballet, and One Extraordinary Riot by Lauren Stringer Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors?
