I enthusiastically second Julie's post about the Mazza Museum. My colleague and I were fortunate enough to be awarded a grant to attend a Mazza Weekend Conference last fall. We enjoyed a dinner with Mo Willems, Erin and Philip Stead, David Macaulay, David Ezra Stein, Gary Schmidt and Jon J. Muth (yes, the artists/authors are actually seated at the tables with the attendees!) and then a wonderful weekend of lectures given by these amazing talents. The Mazza Museum staff members are incredibly enthusiastic and gracious hosts, and they couldn't have been more understanding when two grown women (us!) nearly started hyperventilating with excitement! If you have a chance to attend a conference, jump at it!

If you enjoy exploring the art of the picture book and are ever near Findlay, Ohio, check out the Mazza Museum at the University of Findlay. I had never heard of it until my parents moved there. It has a rotating gallery-style display of original picture book art, along with extra information about the art/processes and the picture books in which the illustration appeared. If you happen to be there when a school tour is going on, you can learn even more. They also have conferences and the gift shop is amazing. (I'm not associated with them in any way. I just love it.)

Thank you to those of you who "explored the scary" for the first part of November.
It's time to take up our topic for the second part of the month: Artful: Best Illustrated Books and Other Thoughts on Picture Book Art.
The New York Times has come out with its list of the "Best Illustrated Books of 2013" (see slideshow: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2013/10/31/books/review/31best-illustrated.html ). During the second half of November, we invite you to talk about these titles and/or your thoughts on elements and examples of outstanding book illustration.
