I thank Monica who directed me to these two posts by Adam:

I think he has it right - fairy tales are just that - tales. Children are mostly able to see and feel the difference. Another poster mentioned older children. My experience of seeing a young woman do a presentation on YA novels that involved rape and abuse (which she herself had suffered) in which she burst into tears was an eye-opener. Another presentation on horror in YA (and why there is an R rating in movies but not books) was another revelation. These were both critical thesis presentations by Hamline MFAC students, by the way.

My question then is - for children who cannot tell the difference, and are terrified by original tales and their gory details, why is this so? And does "making stories nice" protect any child? Given comments here about parents yelling and frightening kids more than stories do?

So much food for thought and discussion!
