Fwd: Exploring the Scary

I'm loving this discussion of scary books!

Book apps continue to fascinate me with the way they integrate narration, sound effects, animation and interactive features to enhance a reader's experience of a story. While book apps for young kids are proliferating, ones that hook tween & teen readers are not as common.

*Midnight Feast <http://www.slaphappylarry.com/midnight-feast/>* by Lynley Stace <http://www.slaphappylarry.com/about/> is a creepy tale set in a slightly futuristic, dreamlike world. Stace captures a young teen's mingling of fantasy and reality. The artwork, narration and effects create a definitely spooky mood. Here's my longer review: http://greatkidbooks.blogspot.com/2013/10/midnight-feast-eerily-creepy-book-app.html

My favorite bit: you can turn on & off the "scary sauce", adjusting just how creepy you want the effects to be.

Well worth its starred Kirkus review. A great example to check out if you're wondering what book apps are like.
