I think many of us, kids as well as adults, find odd comfort in the scary in books. Life is so uncontrollable...and kids know it. Having an author acknowledge that LIFE IS SCARY brings great relief. Yes, the supernatural can be frightening, but nothing is really as scary to a child as “When Daddies Yell and Mommies holler” as they do in, Robie Harris and Chris Rascka’s, WHEN LIONS ROAR. I grew up in a time, where adults did not talk about the scary in front of the kids. Yet, I knew it was all around. We all don't get the joy of saying, "GO AWAY! SCARY GO AWAY!"
Oddly enough, as my friend Bruce Coville, always answers his phone, I write mysteries and funny scary books, because then I am in control. I’d like to hear from others who write or read scary books whether they have ever, guiltily or not, skipped ahead to find out what happened. To me that’s the joy of a scary book, it’s in my control.
