Picture books about fear

Before Halloween, I often read aloud stories that involve countenancing fear.

Helena Clare Pittman's *Once When I Was Scared* is story of a child who, en route to collect live coals from a distant neighbor at night, hears scary sounds and imagines himself a variety of animals, gorgeously illustrated by Ted Rand's watercolors.

Also beautifully illustrated, this time by the Dillons, is Ray Bradbury's *Switch on the Night, *a worthy companion to *The Dark.*

Recently I added *Dark Night*, a French import by Dorothee de Monfreid in which Felix, with the help of a rabbit living in a secret home beneath a protective tree, is emboldened to take action against the creatures that scare him.

Another title about fear which my students also love is Reynolds's *Creepy Carrots*.

There are so many great scary titles for children!

Yours in the dark, Maureen Milton
