Some Creepy Reads

I posted some of my favorite creepy reads at Reading Through Life<http://readingtl.blogspot.com/2013/10/creepy-reads.html> in October.

I find creepy books a tricky line to walk with read-alouds since there is such a variance in what students are able to enjoy without being truly frightened. *The Dark at the Top of the Stairs* and Lemony Snickett's *The Dark* are great for the younger students and can lead into discussion about fears.

I also enjoyed Doll Bones and it's mild level of creepiness which is great for middle grade. I have students who want to be frightened and they are asking for the scariest books they can get. They usually enjoy the Alvin Schwarz books, the Skeleton Creek series, Skeleton Man and books by Mary Downing Hahn. Skeleton Creek is really cool with the extra online videos that make you jump.
