Dear CCBC-Net Community,
It turns out hosting the CCBC's 50th anniversary banquet and the Charlotte Zolotow Lecture featuring Leonard Marcus in October, while making for a wonderful night, also made for dismal oversight of CCBC-Net last month. Our apologies for letting the discussion languish, and for never getting to our topic for the second half of October: Books That Explore Scary, which we'll talk about the first part of this month.
But first, Leonard Marcus's Charlotte Zolotow Lecture, "Why Picture Books Matter," is now archived and available for viewing at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw4irLeh-cM
As for CCBC-Net, here are the topics for this month:
November Topics:
*First Half of Month: Are You Afraid of the Dark?* *And Other Books That Explore Scary**.*Lemony Snicket's /The Dark /(Little, Brown, 2013) shines the light on something that scares many children and show it's not so frightening after all.During the second half of October, we invite you to share your thoughts on books that explore the things that kids and teens often find scary, whether it's titles that play with their fears in a way that's deliciously satisfying (because some readers like to be scared through the safety of a book), or, like /The Dark/, offers comfort that is anything but cold.(Originally scheduled for second half of October)
*Second Half of the Month: Artful: Best Illustrated Books and Other Thoughts on Picture Book Art.* The /New York Times /has come out with its list of the "Best Illustrated Books of 2013" (see slideshow: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2013/10/31/books/review/31best-illustrated.html
). During the second half of November, we invite you to talk about these titles (which include Jon Klassen's illustrations for Lemony Snicket's
/The Dark/) and/or your thoughts on elements and examples of outstanding book illustration.(Also of interest /The Horn Book Magazine's /"Calling Caldecott" blog: http://www.hbook.com/category/blogs/calling-caldecott/ )
Please share your announcements over the next few days, and we'll launch the discussion early next week.
