I would like to chime in with this suggestion for book pairing-- Susan Campbell Bartoletti's companion books:
*HITLER YOUTH: GROWING UP IN HITLER'S SHADOW
and
*THE BOY WHO DARED: A NOVEL BASED ON THE TRUE STORY OF A HITLER YOUTH
Sue first wrote her nonfiction Newbery Honor Book, HITLER YOUTH, a riveting and chilling documentary that hones in on a few of the 7 million girls and boys who were swept into the Nazi propaganda machine. She became so fascinated with one of the subjects, a young man who resisted, that she wrote a novel about him: THE BOY WHO DARED. The novel is as thoroughly researched as the nonfiction book-and is written as a thriller.
(Both books are Middle Grade /YA Ages 11-up)
