I teach a course for preservice teachers on content and pedagogy for science and social studies in which historical fiction has always played a part. In recent years I have paired these works with nonfiction or poetry titles. The students read them together, analyze them, and then think about how to best use them in the classroom. The favorite pairings for students have been:
FEVER 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson AN AMERICAN PLAGUE: THE TRUE AND TERRIFYING STORY OF THE YELLOW FEVER EPIDEMIC OF 1793 by Jim Murphy
THE WATSON’S GO TO BIRMINGHAM – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis BIRMINGHAM, 1963 by Carole Boston Weatherford
BLOOD ON THE RIVER: JAMES TOWN, 1607 by Elisa Carbone 1607: A NEW LOOK AT JAMESTOWN by Karen Lange
Best, Tricia
