Oh, I just loved to use Miss Nelson is Missing to teach a little classroom behavior and also have fun playing with the voices -- I can do a mean Miss Swamp!!!
I also liked using Chrysanthamum when dealing with names and teasing.
An unusual story I used that 3rd graders really liked was Virgie Goes to School about African-American children in a family struggling to get an education. It had substance!
I always struggled to find titles for use in library orientation that the classroom teachers weren't reading. I feel it is important to read to children the first time they see/meet you in the LMC.

Two early chapter books and one picture book, all wonderful and humorous back to school-- or even, first time to school-- stories for very young readers are:
*Princess Posey and the First Grade Parade* and
*Princess Posey and the New First Grader* both by Stephanie Greene
*Mrs. Watson Wants Your Teeth* by Alison McGhee
