School Stories

Two very different books come to mind:

For the variety of voices, the portrayal of inner-city students and the use of poetry in a picture book, I like Speak to Me (And I Will Listen Between the Lines) by Karen English. The characters remind me of students I used to teach. Middle to older elementary school students will find someone to connect with, thanks to the incredible variety of moods (joy, hurt, anger, etc.) each character experiences.

For the sentimental reason of having used the idea with my own separation-a nxiety-ridden daughter, I have to include The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.
