Lemony Snicket is the guest editor of a se ction titled "Poetry Not Written for Children That Children Might Nevertheless Enjoy" in the new issue of POETRY ( Poetry Foundation, Se pt. 2013). That section is accompanied by six full-color illustrations c reated by Chris Rashka, one of being repeated on the co ver . (Full color, on the cover - both realities are astonishing! ) Snick et's sup erb commentary "All Good Slides Are Slippery" preced es 19 brief (and I mean extremely short) poems including works by Carrie Fountain, Ron Padgett, Lorine N iedecker, Richard Brautigan and Sherman Alexie. Snicket's occasional asterisked notes interj e ct whimsy (why am I not astonished ? ). Example: his comment about a reference by Franz Wright to the Tw e nty-first Psalm in which he remarks th at "The Bible contains some fantastic poetry , although I've always preferred Franz Wri ght's." He notes that poet "Maram al-Massri is a Syrian woman who now lies in the city of Paris, France
Carl Sandburg is an American man who doesn't live anywhere, due to death." Before I reveal any other punch lines, I'll merely commend this unexpected, charming interlude appears in an issue worthy for what POETRY always offers to absolutely no one's astonishment: fine poems and in cis ive comment ary.

E ssays by Kay Ryan and Clive James are f eatured in this particular issue .
