Thank you, Ruth G. and Christina McT., for your responses about talking with kids who need some help with their gender attitudes. I rarely encounter kids, to my regret, so I'm always interested in experience like what you're describing.
I wonder whether library science schools and programs offer their students training in how to handle children who display inappropriate behavior in the library, prejudiced and negative attitudes, etc. I hope the human element is still important in librarian training, not just electronic data bases and the like. (!)
You said it, Big Grandma, the old days really were easier.
