My copy of Mini Grey's Toys in Space just arrived, and this discussion came to mind. The child in the story playing with an assortment of toys (including a doll) is male. The toys are the protagonists of the tale, and the most prominent one (who also narrates the story) is female, Wonder Doll. The cast includes "a resourceful Pink Horse" wearing an apron, and thus also presumably female. The alien the toys encounter (in search of its own lost toy) is gender-neutral, referred to as "it" consistently. Once again, Mini Grey deftly breaks from the traditional gender roles in her story.
