GENDER ROLES

It seems eons ago - 1977- 36 years - I penned MAMA (Boyds Mills Press; paperback) about a working class single-parent mother who steals to support her family.

MAMA reappears in the sequel, MAMA & HER BOYS (Boyds Mills Press; paperback) in l98l.

Publishers Weekly hailed MAMA stating in part the "...story of a too-resourceful mother and her two inner-city sons rockets along inducing tears and laughter with every scene."

At the time the books were also criticized for depicting such a 'woman'!

Here we are in the 2lst century where so many single-parents are struggling and when the novels are garnering more attention than they did when they were first published.

Although the character, MAMA, is fictional in these books, they are based on my own mother, a hard-working woman with little education who had to do things her way -- a woman who insisted "Mama wants you to keep on smiling all through your life."

I keep smiling.
